Seeing UK Container Logistics Up Close: A Visit to DP World Southampton

Visit to DP World Southampton

Summary

Working with freight software, it is easy to think about logistics in terms of loads, routes, carriers, documents and data. Standing underneath the cranes at DP World Southampton is a useful reminder that every one of those records eventually represents something very physical: a container being lifted from a ship, moved across a terminal and handed into the next part of the supply chain.

Standing underneath the cranes at DP World Southampton is a useful reminder that every one of those records eventually represents something very physical: a container being lifted from a ship, moved across a terminal and handed into the next part of the supply chain.

On 15 July 2026, I joined a CILT(UK) visit to DP World Southampton. We were shown around the terminal, visited the facilities for truck drivers and watched containers being discharged from a vessel at the quay.

Southampton is not the UK's largest container port, but it is certainly one of the important ones. DP World says the terminal handled more than 2 million TEU in 2025. The numbers are impressive, but they don't really communicate the scale until you are there.

Getting inside

Even entering the operational area was interesting. This is critical infrastructure, so visitors receive passes and a security briefing before entering restricted areas. The rules cover access, searches, suspicious activity and even when and where photography is permitted.

Video: Watching straddle carriers

The most memorable part for me was watching a ship actually being discharged. A crane lifts a container from the vessel, it enters the terminal operation and the straddle carriers take over movements around the yard. You can know perfectly well how container terminals work, but watching it happen a few metres away is different.

In software, a container movement eventually becomes a database record, an API message, a status update or a transport order. At Southampton, you see the ships, cranes, containers, vehicles, drivers and people required to make that status change happen.

The visit was also a good opportunity to speak with people outside our immediate part of logistics. I met people from Visku and spoke with members of the DP World team and other logistics professionals.

Thank you, CILT (UK), for organising such an insighful event.
